Frequently Asked Questions

Semaglutide is a peptide (a small protein) that activates specific metabolic pathways in your body to enhance blood sugar metabolism and reduce appetite. Semaglutide is available commercially in three FDA-approved medications, two that are FDA approved for diabetics whose blood sugar is not yet controlled, and one that is FDA approved for the treatment of obesity.
The effects of whether semaglutide works for you vary depending on the individual. While some notice a decrease in their appetite right away, the dosing does gently increase over several months so the effect may take weeks to build.
Semaglutide helps individuals with weight loss through an added-on hormone response to someone’s insulin release, interconnecting with high blood sugar. This response gives you a reduced appetite, positive body response, and ultimately loss of weight – in a healthy way! In simple, laid out terms, semaglutide is also able to help with:

  • Decreasing appetite
  • The feeling of fullness and satisfaction from smaller meals
  • More controlled and stable blood sugar levels

Semaglutide is best combined with a healthy, lower carbohydrate nutrition plan and mild exercise journey. Incorporating both will enhance the effectiveness of semaglutide and help you notice a change in your body weight more quickly!

So, what are the quantitative effects that semaglutide provides? How much weight does one normally lose with semaglutide treatment?

On average, a trial of people showed participants able to lose over 15% of their starting body weight from using semaglutide over about 15 months. Because the treatment made it easy for people to engage in a caloric deficit, where people consumed fewer calories than burned, it was an effective and safe method to gradually lose weight over time.

If you want to increase your probability of keeping lost weight off, health coaches recommend integrating regular workouts to your weight loss routine.

The steps you need to take in partaking in a semaglutide program are quite straightforward, but it’s essential to get a consultation with your doctor or licensed professional to get a solid outline of the process to adhere to your needs.

There are multiple ways to inject the medication, including your upper thighs, arms, or abdomen – whichever your doctor instructs you to do and if you have a specific preference. The dose is slowly increased over three months and then continued for 6-12 months or until the goal weight is achieved. The medication is injected only once a week.

It is a good idea to reach out to your physician or health coach to collectively decide on a diet and workout plan that is the best fit for you. Since semaglutide’s effects are there to help you feel more full, the nutrition coach will keep that in mind when creating your diet plan!

For some medications, foods are restricted – but not semaglutide. It is not necessary to restrict yourself from certain foods during the medication, but most individuals choose to reduce certain foods that they feel may negatively impact their goals, like carbohydrates or sugar-based sweets. This increases your chance of success.

Although this may be beneficial for the short-run, it is best to not strictly refrain from completely eliminating foods from your diet. You will want to maintain your diet and lifestyle change, so it’s important to account for some foods that may not be necessarily healthy as well. In order to stick to a long–term, healthy plan, work with a nutritionist to find a diet that best works for you and your needs. We highly recommend working with a nutritionist to guide you toward an eating plan that works for you. We can refer you to an excellent nutrition coach who has worked virtually with many of our patients to help them succeed.

You may also want to think about meal planning, as that can not only better your weight loss journey but it’s also great for budgeting as well! When thinking about foods to consume, it is recommended to incorporate more lean protein in combination with lesser carbohydrates to avoid bloating and build muscle strength. Some good examples of lean proteins are:

  • Spinach
  • Tuna
  • Chickpeas
  • Chicken
  • Eggs

As for snacks, try incorporating more fruits and vegetables. These are high sources of fiber and vitamins, so they are very good for you.

Commercial semaglutide would be a great option for many people; however, insurance usually does not cover the cost. It typically costs from $800-1300/month. The other advantage of using a compounded product is that the pharmacy can add other ingredients, which may reduce the incidence of side effects. Note, however, that only the aforementioned commercial medications are FDA approved. Compounded semaglutide is not FDA approved.

The provider will do an initial consultation, either virtual or in person. The semaglutide will be prescribed and shipped directly to you, and you will be given specific dosing instructions. We will also recommend a nutrition coach if you are interested in adding that service. The provider will follow up with you at one month and two months to assess your progress.

As you continue, provider visits are required every 3 months to monitor your progress (cost of $75), and refills of semaglutide will be given as needed. Prices of semaglutide vary from time to time based on availability and your dose, but typically run between $300-450/month.

While we do not yet have good studies on the long term use of semaglutide for weight loss, the length of time semaglutide is taken varies considerably. If you only have 10-20 pounds to lose, you most likely would not need to stay on semaglutide long-term. Once you reach your goal weight, we will customize a weaning schedule for you. However, for those who have a substantial amount of weight to lose, semaglutide may be needed for many months or even at an ongoing low dose for weight loss maintenance. This will be customized for you as you achieve your weight loss goals.
